Bathed in the warm, diffused sunlight, the soft bristles of this wild grass stand out against a beautifully blurred background. While science names it Setaria viridis, and many know it as foxtail, in Japan it is called “Enokorogusa”—meaning puppy tail grass. Yet, for me, it will always be the “cat teaser.” It is amusing how a simple roadside plant carries so many animal names. Looking closely at its delicate, glowing spikes, you can almost feel the gentle breeze. Though I cannot vouch for a cat’s preference, this little green wand certainly captures the human imagination effortlessly.
