Resting quietly within the hallowed grounds of Chikudo Shrine and Yotsugi Inari is a pair of weathered stones that seem to defy human capability. These are known as “Chikara-ishi” (Power Stones).
Historically, these stones were more than just inanimate objects; they were the ultimate test of physical prowess. In the Edo period, young men would gather at shrines to compete in feats of strength, hoisting these massive boulders—often weighing over 100kg—to prove their vitality and offer their vigor to the deities.
As I stood before these silent relics, draped in sacred shimenawa ropes, I couldn’t help but wonder: How could a human possibly lift such a weight? The texture of the stone, worn smooth by countless hands and the passage of centuries, tells a story of raw ambition and spiritual dedication. They remain today not just as heavy rocks, but as echoes of a titanic strength that once pulsed through this very earth.
